About Putnam

The town of Putnam as we know it today is vastly different than it once was. The present day Cargill Falls was once home to various grist and saw mills back in the mid- 1700’s. These mills provided for, and serviced, the farm families in the surrounding hills and towns. In 1806 the country’s third cotton mill was built in Putnam, the Pomfret Manufacturing Cotton Mill.

Since the early 1800’s Putnam has been steadily growing in both population and economic development. Most well know as the Antique Capitol of the Northeast, Putnam offers additional benefits to the community and the business owner as well. In the past decade Putnam has built a modern industrial park which provides convenient access to the Providence and Worcester Railroad as well as Interstate 395. Most recently, Putnam has undergone a massive redevelopment in the downtown area, giving two entire shopping plazas a new look. There are currently future development plans for additional areas of Putnam already in the works, eventually striving to revitalize the entire downtown area. The revitalization has been wonderful for business, relocation and new home growth as well.

The Day Kimball Healthcare system is located in Putnam, providing healthcare needs to more than 85,000 residents in Northeastern Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island. The healthcare family includes Day Kimball Hospital, Day Kimball Homemakers, Day Kimball Homecare, and Hospice and Palliative care. The Hospital also offers satellite locations in the neighboring towns of Danielson, Dayville, Thompson and Plainfield.

Putnam provides a complete educational program for its residents all the way through, and including, high school. The Putnam Public Schools organization was developed to promote a high quality leaning environment for students and families. The school system also boasts a state-of-the-art, 670 seat, air conditioned auditorium for both school and community events.
